Self-Care is a Necessity

You don’t have to wait to take care of yourself when you finally have a free day from work. If you do that, you’ll be burnt out before you can even enjoy your free day. That’s why I’d rather do things that aren’t very time consuming throughout each and every day. That way, I can be at peace knowing I did what I’ve wanted to do before I have to be productive. I do have three jobs at the moment. One full time job and two side gigs, so finding time for myself can be a bit difficult.

I’m going through a healing stage with heartbreak and dropping toxic friends. I’d rather surround myself with people who elevate and inspire me to become better. I will not accept anything less. Here are a couple things I enjoy:

  • Listening to a podcast when you first wake up! When you’re awake, you may gravitate towards your phone and scroll through social media. At least, that’s how I was. Now, I let my eyes take a break and let my ears and mind work. I enjoy listening to various podcasts. I’ve been listening to Two Funny Mamas by Sherri Shepherd & Kym Whitley. They always make me laugh out loud and I love hearing their perspective about topics such as, being single mothers and doing everything for their child like being their teacher & doctor. They also discuss topics such as To shave or not to shave during quarantine, making sense of their Executive Functioning Disorder, advice they never took from their mothers, social issues and they talk about more topics but you’ll have to listen to each episode to find out what they are!
    • They are raw, unfiltered and are so hilarious that I keep binging their podcast episodes. Their podcast is also on YouTube so you can see them and their facial expressions! I love seeing their podcast on YouTube! They also go on Live on social media and they post it on Youtube so we can enjoy! Every episode is over 1 hour so you may not have time to listen to all of it at once. If you are more visual than you can check them out on their YouTube channel! What I like to do is, I would listen when I first wake up, listen while making myself hot water and ginger or hot chocolate, exercise, or whenever I have free time. I’ll listen a little bit at a time. Especially when it’s hard for me to focus on the whole podcast in one sitting. Podcasts are like books, there are so many genres! You can listen to true crime, religion and spirituality, news and politics. The list is endless! This may be biased but I like to read the reviews first before listening to a podcast. That way, I can see what kind of information listeners are receiving and seeing if it’s worth my time!
  • Do you love reading anime but you don’t want to constantly go to the library to check them out? Then Webtoon is something you should look into! There are approximately 23 genres so there’s something for everyone! There are always recommendations on what to read. On the app, I’m subscribed to a lot of comics that I still need to catch up on! There are some styles that I am more attracted to visually so it makes me want to read even more. Some comics I’m reading are “My Giant Nerd Boyfriend,” (relatable, fun short stories about what it’s like to have a taller boyfriend) and “True Beauty”, which is my favorite, it’s about a girl who thinks she looks better with makeup so she makes sure that she’s never without it. She has mastered the art of makeup. Some people may not know what she looks like without makeup. She hides her insecurities but how long can she keep it up? You’ll have to read to find out! I’m always intrigued to find out what happens next so I would read 2 or 3 chapters at a time! I’ll read these when I’m taking a break or before I brush my teeth and get ready for bed!
  • Have fun with your favorite hobby! One of my favorite hobby is skateboarding and longboarding! It’s exhilarating and freeing. I’m great with cruising around but I’m still learning on getting a handle on skateboarding. I’m also learning how to stop smoothly on both of them. I would rather do these things at a skatepark or at a park. If I don’t have time to go to a skatepark or a park then I’d practice in my basement. You don’t have to do it for a long period of time. Even 5 or 10 minutes will do. As long as it calms you down and makes you feel prepared for the day. Then you’re good to go!
  • Of course, making your favorite drink every morning! It’s always a great start for a great day! I enjoy making hot water, honey and ginger tea. I bought it at a Korean store downtown. Right after that, I like to make decaf coffee. Decaf you may ask? Yes. My body cannot handle caffeine so decaf is the way to go. It doesn’t matter what kind of milk I add to it. Whether it’s oat milk or whole milk, it’s still just milk to me. So, I don’t have a favorite. In this picture, the packaging is similar to the honey and ginger tea I bought. I ran out of the honey and ginger one so pictured here is the Jujube Honey Tea. It’s really good as well!

Those are some of the things you can incorporate into your day! It’s really nice to do at least one thing for yourself. It makes you feel in control, even if you can’t control other aspects of your life.
